RACIST- of, relating to, or characterized by the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another. (Merriam-Webster dictionary app)
In no way is this about race. It is about theft and loss. Race is moot in this conversation, yet opponents are trying to make it a racist issue. Walgreens is closing stores in Boston and Chicago due to unrelenting theft. THEFT, not race is the reason for the closures. The stores are losing so much money due to theft that they are no longer viable business entities. Interviews with various black people on the street say this is a racist move to “gentrify the neighbor and get rid of blacks.” Yet, they avoid the real issue, theft, causing the stores to lose so much money that they can no longer survive in the business arena. It’s being said that closing the stores will overwhelmingly impact homeless and health-impaired people, but no one addresses the issue of theft. The Boston mayor and community leaders appear to be promoting crime when they say that Walgreens should remain, allowing the thefts to continue. When stores must use chains and padlocks to prevent access to food, there is a theft problem, not a race problem. Why insist that Walgreens continue to operate at tremendous financial losses rather than letting it be known that “yo, you can’t steal here”? The residents of these closure locations should be imploring those in the community to, red octagon with white letters STOP, stealing from the stores. Why aren’t the wheelchair, walker, and cane users outside the stores to put media pressure on the thieves to stop stealing? The thieves are killing you and you blame Walgreens. How is Walgreens wrong here? Who keeps letting a thief into their home after the first time they are stolen from? Suppose you started a business; you have Things for Sell, and you operate at a loss every quarter. How long could you possibly remain in business? Name one business entity other than the WNBA, (which is wholly subsidized by the NBA and still loses more than 10,000,000 USD yearly), which could survive operating at an increasing financial loss. Businesses do not go into business to lose money; people should not expect them to. Address the issue of thievery that exists, and that will resolve the problem. Retail theft is called “shrinkage” and a concept that will reduce shrinkage by a considerable amount is available.
